Power Generation FiltrationCommon Questions
What should we do when a critical filter is obsolete or unavailable before an outage?
Start by documenting the existing filter and application, including manufacturer, part number, dimensions, filtration rating, media, and operating conditions. From there, the options may include locating remaining OEM supply, cross-referencing another manufacturer, or evaluating an alternative that meets the application requirements.
King can source across a broad range of manufacturers and work with plant end users to review alternatives when appropriate, rather than forcing a substitution.
Why are we replacing filters more often than expected?
Frequent changeouts can indicate that the filter is undersized, incorrectly selected, seeing a higher contaminant load than expected, or dealing with a broader system problem such as water ingress or changing process conditions. Replacing the same element repeatedly may treat the symptom without addressing the cause.
King works with plant engineers and maintenance teams to troubleshoot existing filtration systems, improve performance, extend filter life, and evaluate newer filtration technologies where appropriate.
How can we reduce contamination in turbine lube oil or EHC systems?
The right approach depends on what is contaminating the fluid and how it is entering or forming in the system. Particulate, water, and fluid degradation can require different filtration or conditioning strategies, so identifying the contamination problem should come before changing equipment.
Turbine lubrication and EHC fluid treatment are established areas of King’s power-generation filtration experience, allowing King to support both replacement sourcing and broader filtration-system troubleshooting.
When should we consider upgrading a filtration system instead of replacing the same filter?
An upgrade is worth evaluating when the existing system is creating frequent maintenance, excessive downtime, short filter life, high disposal costs, or inadequate filtration performance. In those situations, the lowest-cost replacement element may not provide the lowest operating cost.
King can help evaluate newer filtration technologies and system improvements intended to reduce downtime, extend service life, improve performance, and lower labor or disposal costs.
How do we know whether an equivalent filter is actually acceptable?
A true equivalent should be evaluated against the application requirements, not just physical dimensions. Filtration performance, media, materials, flow, pressure, and other operating requirements may all affect whether the alternative is suitable.
King can supply the specified brand when required and review alternatives with the end user when savings or performance improvements are possible. The plant retains control over whether a proposed change is accepted.
Which filters should we keep as critical spares?
Focus first on filters whose unavailability could contribute to equipment downtime, where replacement lead times are long, or where the item is difficult to source quickly. Installed quantity, available redundancy, outage usage, and whether another plant carries the same item can also affect the stocking decision.
King can support critical-filter stocking and broader inventory reviews so plants can balance availability against the cost of carrying unnecessary inventory.
How can we reduce duplicate filter inventory across multiple plants?
Start by comparing filter specifications, manufacturer numbers, item descriptions, and actual applications across locations. Duplicate items, inconsistent descriptions, and plant-specific purchasing can often hide opportunities to standardize products or make better use of inventory already within the organization.
King’s Supply Chain Alliance Program approach specifically supports filter standardization, duplicate consolidation, item-data cleanup, and increased inventory utilization across plant locations while preserving end-user approval of changes.
