How Auto-Klean™ Works
Auto-Klean™ filters use a precision metal disc stack to remove contaminants continuously while staying in service. Fluid flows through narrow slots formed by stacked discs and spacing washers, capturing solids down to 25 microns without disrupting flow.
1
Fluid Enters and Passes Through Precision Slots
Fluid flows from outside to inside through narrow slots formed by stacked metal discs and spacing washers.
Washer thickness sets the micron rating (filtration down to 25 microns).
2
Contaminants Are Captured on the Disc Edges
As the liquid moves through the slots, solids collect on the edges of the discs and around the cylindrical element, without interrupting flow.
3
Self-Cleaning Scrapes Solids Free
Turning the handle, or activating a motor drive, rotates the disc stack against fixed cleaning blades.
The blades scrape buildup from each slot and restore full flow while the filter remains online.
4
Debris Drops Into the Sump for Removal
Dislodged solids fall into the sump at the base of the filter.
Operators can remove accumulated debris through a drain plug or valve, manually or on a scheduled maintenance cycle.

Q&A
Your Questions About Auto-Klean, Answered.
How do I identify which Auto-Klean™ or legacy CUNO® model I have?
Most Auto-Klean™ and CUNO® housings look similar, and nameplates are often worn or missing, so the fastest way to identify your model is to match disc diameter, cartridge length, spacing code, sump shape, and inlet/outlet size.
If you have only a cartridge part number (e.g., 13131-07-50-0080 or 14145-17-50-0030), the corresponding housing can be determined directly.
How King Filtration helps:
King provides free model verification, even from a photo of the nameplate, element, or housing, and confirms the exact cartridge, housing series, and modern equivalent before you order.
Which cartridge spacing (0030, 0050, 0080, 0120, etc.) should I be using?
Spacing determines micron rating, system backpressure, and solids-handling efficiency. Too fine a spacing causes unnecessary pressure drop; too coarse reduces protection. Many operators use the wrong spacing because the original spec was lost.
How King Filtration helps:
Our team reviews your application—fluid type, viscosity, contaminant load, pressure requirements—and recommends the correct spacing code so the filter stays in service longer while maintaining equipment protection.
Can Auto-Klean™ filters replace disposable basket or cartridge filters?
Yes. Auto-Klean units are specifically designed for continuous operation without shutdown, using an all-metal, cleanable element. This eliminates routine element replacement, reduces waste, and stabilizes system pressure.
King Filtration performs conversion support, matching your current disposable filter’s flow rate, pressure tolerance, and micron rating to the appropriate Auto-Klean housing and element.
How do I know when my Auto-Klean™ element needs cleaning or replacement?
Typical signs include rising differential pressure, reduced flow, harder-than-normal handwheel rotation, or visible fouling in the sump. However, cleaning intervals vary widely depending on fluid type and contaminant load.
King Filtration can help you determine the correct cleaning interval, evaluate whether you need a motorized drive, and supply replacement cartridges for worn elements.
What fluids can Auto-Klean™ filters handle?
Auto-Klean filters support oils, resins, fuels, process chemicals, steam condensate, viscous fluids, high-temperature fluids, and water-like media, depending on the housing and spacing selected.
King Filtration experts can verify chemical compatibility, metallurgy, spacing, and temperature ratings based on your application, ensuring long-term performance and safety.
What should I do if my existing Auto-Klean™ or CUNO® model is obsolete?
Many legacy models, SM, SMS, KAT-A, KAT-F, PM, MPM, AK511, 4.4 AK, MSV, have no current catalogs, but their functional equivalents still exist.
King Filtration provides 1:1 conversion paths, identify compatible modern housings and elements, and confirm connection sizes and spacing codes, preventing costly trial-and-error.
